Talking about the voluntary blood donation journey, Mr. Nguyen Ngoc Duong said that in 2004, many times when he went to the hospital to take care of his relatives for treatment, he witnessed many patients in danger when the hospital did not have enough blood for timely treatment. he was upset. Through information on the radio, he knew that many hospitals needed blood to save lives, so he told himself that he had to join hands with the community by donating blood.

“At that time, I took care of my relatives at the hospital in Hanoi. I witnessed a son, raising a sick father had to call for blood everywhere to have suitable blood to save his father in critical condition. At that time, I decided to donate blood. , although I don’t know if my blood matches. Fortunately, after checking, the doctor said my blood was suitable. Thanks to my donor blood, the recipient gradually recovered,” said Mr. Duong.
From that time, Mr. Duong began his journey of sharing his red blood. To date, he has made 26 blood donations. Not only donating blood until the age allowed, he also mobilized his family members to donate blood to save lives. Specifically, he mobilized 16 relatives to participate with more than 150 units of blood. Recently, the most joyful thing for him is that his two sons also followed in his father’s work to donate blood to save lives. “Since the beginning of my blood donation journey, I just want to donate when I can’t anymore. Now that I’m over 60 years old, I’m no longer eligible to donate blood, so I feel very regretful. But then I thought, I’m sorry. If I can’t donate anymore, I’ll mobilize relatives and friends to donate, so I try my best to propagate,” said Mr. Duong.
Every day, when drinking coffee with friends, Mr. Duong introduces the meaning and effects of voluntary blood donation to those around him. Seeing the enthusiasm in him, gradually more people also joined.
Not only is he active in blood donation, he also cherishes the desire to donate organs to save lives when he dies.
Ms. Bui Thi Kim Thuong (Mr. Duong’s wife) shared that in the past, she was very afraid to see blood, just cut her hand and see blood, she was dizzy and dizzy. But through the times accompanying her husband to donate blood, she saw the meaning of this, along with her husband’s encouragement, so she also participated. To date, Ms. Thuong has donated blood 12 times. The son and daughter-in-law each donated blood twice.
By spreading the spirit of blood donation to save lives, Mr. Duong was twice honored and rewarded by the Voluntary Blood Donation Campaign Committee of Vinh Long province.
Ms. Nguyen Thuy Yen Phuong, Chairman of the Red Cross Association of Vinh Long province, said that Mr. Duong’s family is one of many typical blood donation families in Vinh Long. When his age was no longer allowed to participate in blood donation, he switched to propagandizing to mobilize relatives and the community to properly understand and fully understand the benefits of voluntary blood donation.
Phuong added that thanks to typical families like Mr. Duong, the province’s voluntary blood donation campaign has always achieved high results, contributing to maintaining and expanding the blood donation source.
