That thoughtless song is weighing heavily on the minds of many young people, including those who work far from their hometown, even those who have just graduated from university when the job and income are not stable, and especially after the disaster of a terrible Covid-19 pandemic that has just swept through the city, leaving extremely heavy harms and has not ended yet.

Many people do not have money to return to their hometown, although train tickets and plane tickets may not be a problem, but gift money, money for parents, money for relatives, lucky money for children… just think arrival was enough to discourage expatriates. That’s why so many people have celebrated Tet far away from home in sorrow and tears.
Returning, not returning, returning… has become an obsession for many young people living in the city. No wonder, on New Year’s Eve, many of you were crouched in your attic, tears streaming down your pillow just because you missed your parents and your hometown. Some people couldn’t stand the loneliness and self-pity, so they took their backpacks and ran to the bus station to take the last trip back to their hometown, despite gifts, money for parents, and lucky money. Who banned me? Poverty is not a sin.
But very few people question what parents need from their children when the New Year comes in the spring. The simple answer is that parents just need to meet and reunite, just see the baby’s dear face and shape on Tet holiday. Even though the parents are poor, they still don’t need the money their children bring home. Parents just need their children back is enough. Having children is having everything. Having children is having Tet. When I come back, it’s Tet. That when you are a parent you will understand.
When I was still in college and even when I was working far away, on New Year’s Eve, my mother would go out to the alley to see if my son had returned. Every afternoon. And when I see you back, I don’t care about gifts, don’t care if you have money to give me or not. Seeing you come back is a bright smile on your mother’s lips.
That’s why I don’t like the saying “Bring the money home”. It is contributing to breaking the reunion of children with their parents during a sacred New Year.
Don’t tie yourself with ropes. Also, don’t put pressure on yourself just because of the phrase “bring money back to your mother” and then act foolishly, celebrate Tet far away from home and hang yourself in the attic while your parents are tired of waiting and missing you.
Having money to bring back to my mother, too good. But there’s nothing bad about it. When Tet comes, go back to your parents, back to your old home in your hometown when you can, even if you only have a poor body. Because “The way home is to my heart”, a song that only brings tears to my eyes.
