I don’t know when, people have planted phoenix trees on school grounds in Vietnam. And so, most generations of students – students from elementary school to university have good memories with this tree until disaster struck, leading to the tragic death of a 6th grader. in Ho Chi Minh City due to being hit by a large phoenix tree in the school yard.
After the above heartbreaking incident, a series of phoenix trees in the school yard in Ho Chi Minh City and a few provinces were cut down, to avoid similar accidents that may happen. If you are sober to see, then the big trees in our country can fall at any time, the stormy season is broken, the weather is quiet and the wind also falls. If the phoenix tree in the school fell, causing injury to students, on the street, the perennial oil trees and star trees also uprooted and hit people and vehicles moving on the road. So how about this? Because a hundred-year-old oil tree fell and killed passersby, couldn’t the management agency cut down all the trees on that “romantic road”?
Pillars installed to prevent falling trees at Le Van Tam Secondary School (Binh Thanh District, Ho Chi Minh City)
My childhood is associated with a phoenix tree. In 1969, at that time, I was 11 years old and entered the seventh grade (6th grade) of a public high school. One day, the janitor brought a phoenix tree planted on the school campus. When it’s time to play, our boys often play the game of humpback “flying” over the newly planted phoenix tree (about 1 meter high). More than 20 years later, returning to visit the old school, the old phoenix tree was taller than the roof, shady, the humpback dance could not be reproduced anymore.
Students also have good memories with the phoenix tree through… music. The phoenix flower is an inspiration for many musicians to compose life-long songs, for example: Sorrow of phoenix flowers & Green day guestbook (Thanh Son), Pink phoenix (Poetry of Do Trung Quan, music of Vu Hoang), sad phoenix (Le Kim Khanh & Tuan Hai), What a sad memory (Hoai An), Now remember or not (Nhat Tuan’s poetry, Anh Bang’s music)… Even an entire city was included in the music thanks to “everywhere you go, you can see phoenix”, that’s the song. Red Phoenix flower City (composed by Luong Vinh), about Hai Phong.
The poetic of the phoenix flower is that it signals “summer coming”, just like we see peach and apricot flowers in full bloom, signaling the arrival of spring and Tet. If all the trees were cut down for the safety of the students in the school, then the schoolyard would look like a lifeless desert. Schools must have trees and shade. The question is what to plant instead and how to manage it? Not only the phoenix tree, many schools in Ho Chi Minh City have large and tall oil trees. If these trees fall, the consequences are unpredictable. Shouldn’t it also be cut down to prevent disaster?
If someone thinks that I am a “conservative” person, “a nostalgic person”, it is okay, but to be honest, I still want the school yard to be covered with phoenix tails. The problem is that the tree management agency must show proper responsibility with the responsibility assigned by the society. Many phoenix trees in this country still stand strong through storms, because they are planted with roots firmly rooted in the ground and carefully cared for. And if planted in a superficial, irresponsible way, the tree can collapse in any weather. The solution of branching and pruning is also a way to be concerned, don’t let people say the phrase “if you can’t manage it, cut it”.
