An ordinary passport without an electronic chip and an ordinary passport with an electronic chip are used in parallel.
According to the Law on Exit and Entry of Vietnamese citizens, a passport with an electronic chip is a passport with an electronic device that stores encrypted information of the passport holder and the digital signature of the issuer. Persons aged full 14 years or older have the right to choose whether to issue a passport with an electronic chip or a passport without an electronic chip.
Vietnamese citizens who have been issued with an ordinary passport without an electronic chip will continue to use it until the expiry of the passport, and are not required to change to a passport with an electronic chip.
