At noon on April 20, a robbery occurred at the ViettinBank transaction office at Dong Da street (Thach Thang ward, Hai Chau district, Da Nang). Thieves stole more than 600 million VND from the bank and the bank employee’s iPhone 12.
Police quickly arrested suspect Le Phu Cao (32 years old, living in Phu Loc district, Thua Thien – Hue) after 36 hours of committing the crime.
From the testimony and evidence, the robbers carefully planned the crime and his escape.
Detailed plan
According to the initial investigation, Cao was in debt and wanted money to spend, so he planned to rob a bank. Cao buys electric whips and plastic guns to threaten when entering the bank. Cao borrowed his girlfriend’s car and took the fake number plate 43F1-428.. to attach it. He also prepared in the trunk of the car the necessary items to change his external identity to avoid being caught after a successful execution.

At noon on April 20, Cao rode a gray Yamaha Nozza Grande scooter to the bank’s transaction office, parked the car outside and then circled around in front of the ATM to scout inside.
When there were no people, Cao immediately rushed in, threatened with electric whips and pistols, forcing the security guard of the transaction room to stand close to the wall. Cao then went to get a deposit at a transaction desk and forced the staff of the transaction office to give some more money, put it in a plastic bag and then ran out.
After driving the car on Dong Da street for more than 100m, he immediately turned to Chau Van Liem street, went to 3 Thang 2 street and then crossed Thuan Phuoc bridge to cross Son Tra district. He ran into a garbage dump on Duong Lam Street (Nai Hien Dong ward, Son Tra district), discarded hats, coats … scattered in the bushes along the road.

Cao changed sandals, helmets, motorbike license plates and changed the clothes he wore when he entered the bank to commit the robbery. Next, Cao drove to Tran Hung Dao Street, went to Song Han Bridge to continue his escape.
Cao saw the information, saw his image extracted from the camera published in the newspaper, Cao went to cut his hair to change his identity.
Extract hundreds of cameras to capture
Just a few minutes after the robbery information, many police forces arrived at the scene. Colonel Nguyen Van Tang, Deputy Director of Da Nang City Police, directly directed the investigation and arrest. Special projects are also established.
The police force extracted hundreds of security cameras on the streets and houses to track down the robbers and many times lost track because Cao’s journey was not continuously recorded by the camera.

On the evening of April 20, following the traces, the reconnaissance force seized the items that Cao discarded at the landfill. In it, there are license plates, electric whips and a black toy plastic gun (suspected to be the Cao gun used to threaten when robbing).
As predicted by the special team, the robber used a motorcycle with a fake number plate when committing the crime. This makes it difficult to clarify the identity of the robber, and investigating related information takes more time.
However, later, the police clarified that the car that Cao used to rob had the real number plate 37D1.., under the name of a girl from Nghe An. This person is living and working in Da Nang. Finding out the real number plate of the car the robber used is an important turning point in solving the case.
On the evening of April 21, scouts discovered this car was attached with a real number plate, left on the porch of a house at Dong Ke 6 Street (Hoa Khanh Nam Ward, Lien Chieu District). And the girl who owned the car said that this car is often borrowed by her boyfriend Le Phu Cao to use.
With the information collected, the special team has drawn the robber’s journey. However, when the scout went to look for him, Cao was not present at the motel room. The scouts immediately arranged secret uniforms, waiting for Cao to appear. Around 21:30 on April 21, as expected, Cao returned to the inn when scouts arrested him.
When arrested, Cao crookedly refused to admit. But with the matching evidence and convincing struggle of the police, at 23:30, Cao admitted the crime.

Cao said that after robbing the money, Cao went shopping, paid off more than 50 million VND, and hid the rest in his motel room. The police recovered the amount of 590 million VND.
The reconnaissance force involved in solving the case skipped meals, determined to catch the cheeky bandit.
When the information of the Da Nang City Police force quickly investigated, clarified and arrested the perpetrators of the robbery, many people expressed their trust and admiration for the public force to solve the case.
