In the last few months, during the time of urgently preparing for the 2022-2023 school year, I have heard that there are many ups and downs about history at the high school level as an optional subject. This is even discussed at a very high level.

The general education program, once promulgated and implemented, is a “national affair”, which cannot be changed arbitrarily or arbitrarily.
From Resolution 29-NQ/TW dated November 4, 2013 on “Basically and comprehensively renewing education and training”, considering the Government’s report, the 13th National Assembly issued Resolution 88/2014/QH13 dated November 4, 2013. November 28, 2014 on renovation of general education curricula and textbooks.
After 4 years of careful preparation, on December 26, 2018, the Minister of Education and Training issued the General Education Program.
According to the approved roadmap, the new general education curriculum and textbooks have been deployed for 2 school years, with the remaining 3 school years, it will be fully implemented from grade 1 to grade 12.
Practice will specifically reflect the effectiveness of the new program. After implementing the new program from grade 1 to grade 12, it is necessary to evaluate what is and is not, and have solutions to overcome weaknesses and promote advantages.
Before the changes, there must be different opinions, however, in my opinion, in the process of implementing the new program, you should not rush to change and adjust locally.
“Plowing in the middle of the road” will not have a finished product, especially an educational product!
Back to the history subject, before the 2022-2023 school year, the first school year will deploy a new program for grade 10. According to the new program, the high school level is the period of career-oriented education and the subject of history. History is one of 9 elective subjects, belonging to the group of social sciences: history, geography, economic education and law.
From the point of view of fundamental and comprehensive innovation, the above program design is reasonable. General knowledge, the basic foundation of people’s wisdom, is carried out from grade 1 to grade 9.
After junior high school (grade 9), students are oriented to high school or vocational training. High school is a period of career-oriented education, before students enter universities, colleges – high-level careers.
After graduating from junior high school, students can go to vocational training and soon create a life for themselves. In both cases of career orientation or vocational training after 9th grade, of course, it is not necessary to study history.
Understanding the history of Vietnam and the world is essential for every citizen. How to understand, to remember what throughout life is a matter of clear determination.
The arrangement of history education subjects in the 2018 General Education Program (divided into a 9-year basic education phase and a 3-year career orientation phase) is in line with international education trends, have a scientific basis.
According to the 2018 General Education Program issued, the content of the lower-secondary-level history curriculum equips students with basic, general and core knowledge of the entire world history, history and history. Vietnamese history from primitive to ancient, medieval, modern and modern.
Up to the high school level, the history curriculum is designed to focus on learning topics and topics in the fields of history, such as political history, economic history, and cultural history. civilization, cultural history, military history and social history, the interaction and integration of Vietnam into the region and the world.
Thus, each phase of the new program has its own goals, targeting groups of students with different abilities and qualities. History topics at the high school level will be more intensive and difficult, and cannot be taught in large numbers.
However, if at this point, we change, making history subject from optional to compulsory or subject to “compulsory choice”, it also means that every student must study this subject even though they have graduated from high school. high school level, career orientation stage.
From the point of view of educational science, if the history curriculum is changed to be compulsory, the whole curriculum of this subject must be revised at the lower secondary level because now the history curriculum at the lower secondary level has introduced All of the content aims to equip students with general, basic and core knowledge about Vietnamese and world history.
Compulsory teaching is universal. Therefore, it is completely inappropriate to introduce the history curriculum, which is designed and compiled in the direction of selection, differentiation and “enhanced” at the high school level to force all students to learn.
Therefore, I suggest: history at the high school level should continue to be an elective subject according to the design of the 2018 General Education Program issued.
If history change is a compulsory subject in high school, then not now, when it is only a few months away from implementation, let it be after the full implementation of the new program in 2025.
At that time, the changes (if any) need to be based on a valid basis of practical and scientific education.
The roadmap for the implementation of the 2018 general education program:
– From the school year 2020 – 2021 for grade 1.
– From the school year 2021 – 2022 for grade 2, grade 6.
– From the school year 2022 – 2023 for grade 3, grade 7 and grade 10.
– From the school year 2023 – 2024 for grade 4, grade 8 and grade 11.
– From school year 2024 – 2025 for grade 5, grade 9 and grade 12.
