
Prediabetes means having higher than normal blood sugar. It’s not high enough yet to be considered type 2 diabetes. But without lifestyle changes, people with prediabetes are at increased risk of developing diabetes.

What did the research find?
In the current study, US scientists investigated whether a person’s usual total sugar intake – at 72 grams a day (equivalent to 17 teaspoons) – makes increase the risk of diabetes.
Data were analyzed from the US National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey.
The study included 5,306 participants, of whom 3,152 had prediabetes and 2,154 had normal blood sugar. The average age of the participants was 47 years old.
The researchers found that the majority of people with prediabetes were older adults, averaging 51 years old, with 54 percent being male, 35 percent overweight and 44 percent obese.
