Justin Vicky (33 years old) is a bodybuilder, nutrition consultant and personal trainer living in the coastal town of Sanur on the island of Bali (Indonesia). His Instagram account has about 33,000 followers, according to the newspaper Daily Star (Older brother).
He regularly posts videos of himself exercising. On July 5, he posted a video showing him doing a barbell squat. The weights he trained were 170 kg, 190 kg and 200 kg, respectively. At this point, he exercises and has a support person standing behind him, ready to lift weights if he is not strong enough.
On July 15, as usual, he went to The Paradise Bali gym near his home to practice. This training session, he continued to work out the thigh muscles with squats with barbells. In the 210 kg squat, he tried to stand up straight but couldn’t get enough strength. With no one to help him, he fell a few seconds later. Mr. Vicky fell to the floor of the gym, causing the barbell to hit the back of his neck. The incident shocked those present at the time.
“Vicky was unable to complete the lift and fell forward, causing the barbell to fall off his shoulder and hit his neck, causing him to fall forward,” local media reported.
He was quickly taken to the emergency room. At the hospital, the doctor discovered that Mr. Vicky had broken his neck. Nerves in the cervical vertebrae are severely compressed, especially the nerves that connect the brain to the heart and lungs.
Doctors performed emergency surgery to save Mr. Vicky’s life. However, all efforts were unsuccessful. Vicky passed away shortly after. His death has shocked his family, friends and many of his followers on social media.
The Paradise Bali gym also expressed their condolences after Vicky’s death. “Rest in peace mate. We will always miss you,” shared the gym in a social network status.
“He was a person full of energy and motivated me to practice. I will never forget his help in my training journey,” a friend of Mr. Vicky shared.
According to sports experts, longtime weightlifters can understand very well the limits of how much weight they can lift. However, when they lift weights at the limit, there is a risk of an accident. It is during these times that a trainer is essential. It’s usually the coach or the people you practice with. With the barbell squat, some exercises will have a support bar to ensure the safety of the practitioner, according to Daily Star.
