Rattan and bamboo “made in Vietnam” many opportunities in the West

According to estimates of the Vietnam Handicraft Exporters Association (VIETCRAFT), for every 1 million USD of exports of the handicraft industry, the profit of the handicraft industry is 5-10 times higher than that of the mining industry. Therefore, this item is forecasted to have export growth of over 12%/year, export turnover may reach 4 billion USD by 2025.

Thua Thien-Hue, the ancient capital with a variety of traditional occupations, over time many craft villages have been lost. Many artisans find it difficult to live with their craft because of the speed of industrialization. However, the traditional bamboo and rattan craft village of Bao La (Quang Phu commune, Quang Dien district) has a different direction. For many years, this cooperative has always had from tens to hundreds of employees. In the time of the COVID-19 epidemic, many companies are in a state of crisis, but this industry still creates jobs for dozens of people.

Mr. Vo Van Dinh, Director of Bao La Bamboo and Rattan Cooperative, said that after 15 years of development, up to now, the cooperative’s rattan and bamboo have a foothold and are exported to many countries around the world.

Potential market for handicrafts

Products made from rattan, bamboo and sedge of Vietnam have the ability to occupy 10%-15% of the market share in the world market. It is forecasted that Vietnam’s exports of rattan, bamboo, sedge and carpet in 2022 will increase by 20%-30% compared to 2021, exceeding the turnover of 1 billion USD.

It is estimated that the US is the largest consumption market with sales accounting for 35% of annual export turnover. Next are familiar big names such as Japan, EU, Australia, and Korea. Thailand, Taiwan, India, Russia, Chile, and Norway are also potential emerging markets.

In the early years of establishment, the cooperative only had about 30-40 samples of rattan and bamboo products, but now there are more than 500 samples of products on sale.

“To develop this profession requires artisans, workers and cooperatives to always innovate designs according to the needs of users, to be both beautiful and durable before they can be sold and exported,” Dinh said.

Currently, the cooperative has a time when it needs 200 workers to work day and night to keep up with orders. At its peak, each month the cooperative exports about 7,000 products of all kinds to the market.

“Through a number of partners, in 2013 rattan and bamboo products produced by the cooperative were exported and gained a foothold in the international market. According to the assessment, Hue’s exported bamboo and rattan products are well received by partners because of their sophisticated designs and reasonable prices,” Dinh informed.

Among the foreign markets, China accounts for the majority of the output of products. Cooperatives are increasingly finding more markets through social networking platforms and forums. According to Mr. Dinh, e-commerce is an inevitable trend and all traditional businesses must promptly approach it.

Borrowing the power of e-commerce

Joining the export of handicraft products for seven years on Alibaba.com, Ms. Hoang Thanh Tam, CEO of Indochina Creative Investment & Development JSC, with the brand Viettime Craft, sees the international market as invaluable. same potential for businesses participating in this field.

“In 2015, we had the first order on Alibaba.com and only two months later, the products were constantly sold out. Indochina has successfully conquered the European and American markets. Talking to us, Mr. Roger Lou, Alibaba.com Country Director in Vietnam, recognized handicrafts as one of the fastest growing categories on Alibaba.com with more than 2 million products. on display and more than 5,000 active buyers every day, a 15% increase from the same period last year.

In particular, products from rattan and bamboo are sold a lot with a variety of applications from handicrafts to home decoration, garden, furniture, bags…

“Products of Vietnamese enterprises are always highly appreciated for their quality of finished products, diverse designs, export skills and good customer care,” said Mr. Roger Lou.

Although he did not disclose specific figures about the growth rate of the rattan, bamboo and sedge industry group on the Amazon international e-commerce platform, Mr. Gijae Seong, Director of Amazon Global Selling Vietnam, revealed the growth rate and proportion. Continuous growth over the years is always triple digits.

According to Mr. Gijae, the furniture and home decoration industry has been one of the best-selling product groups of Vietnamese sellers on Amazon for two consecutive years, and is expected to continue to grow in 2023.

Accordingly, the materials commonly used by businesses in this industry group are wood and rattan, bamboo … with many designs. This also creates momentum for businesses that want to access this field on the cross-border e-commerce floor.

Recently, the requirements of business customers for handicraft products in general and rattan and bamboo in particular have increased very high.
